Sermon Title:
Church As Family

Matthew 12:46-50

Jesus calls us His Family

The new family of God is not defined by biological blood ties, nor by Jewish lineage, but by a person’s obedience to the will of God.

  • Matthew 12:49-50

Very important Point: When we believe in Jesus, it does not just change our relationship with God. It also changes our relationship with one another.

  • Philippians 4:1

  • Galatians 4:12

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:1-9

Church as family is a positional reality that needs intentionality so that it can become an experienced reality.

Individualism vs Collectivism

Church as family means that we adopt a collectivist mindset: where I see myself as part of a community, rather than as an individual.

Jesus expects us to be a Family

There is a specific call for believers to love one another within the fellowship of the church community.

  • Matthew 25:34-40

Jesus expects that if you are a believer, you will take care of one another.
Jesus expects that salvation will lead naturally to love and care for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Our love for one another does not earn our salvation.
Our love for one another is the fruit of our salvation.

1. Join a cell community

2. Don’t romanticise Church as Family

  • John 13:34-35

3. Riverlife is your Family

  • Becoming a part of God’s family means becoming a part of Riverlife Church
