RiverLife Weekly #44: Our Father's Business
When Jesus was twelve, He went with His family to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of the Passover. After the feast ended, Jesus remained behind and his parents were not aware. When they found Him three days later, Jesus said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49)
What does it mean to be about our Father’s business? In following Jesus, we not only become part of His family, but we are called to join His family enterprise: “Go and make disciples of all nations … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) His enterprise is global – and here is our family game plan.
WHAT DOES A DISCIPLE DO?
Go. Whether we are going across the workstation to interact with our co-workers or going across the seas to the nations, disciples are called to make disciples as we go about our everyday lives. (v.19)
Baptise. As new believers begin to establish their faith in Jesus, we encourage them to make an outward and spiritual declaration through water baptism. (v.19)
Teach. The command to teach may seem overwhelming but it means to learn and obey the teachings of Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to be our ultimate teacher. We don’t have to be fully mature to disciple others, but we can only effectively disciple others if we are growing in our faith. (v.20)
WHO DO I MAKE DISCIPLES OF?
Neighbours. We have people within our relational spaces and living in proximity of our homes that Jesus calls us to share the Gospel with. (Mark 12:28-31)
New Believers. Cell communities actively help new believers grow in their relationships with Jesus and others. (Ephesians 4:14-16)
Family. There is no greater ministry or responsibility than to teach and model the way of Jesus to our children. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)
Generations. Younger generations feel welcome to share dreams and ideas with older ones. The young and zealous will benefit from the wisdom and insight of those who have travelled further along life’s journey. (Titus 2:1-8)
Nations. Whether overseas or within our own communities, Jesus’ call is to make disciples of all people groups and He will be with us. (Matthew 28:18-20)
WHERE DO I START?
Be A Disciple. Our first step in disciple making is to be a disciple. This means growing in intimacy with Jesus and being a life-long apprentice of Him and His Word.
Be Engaged. Our Disciple Making Road Map (rlc.sg/wb2020) is designed to identify where you are on this journey and your next step. Also pray about joining the core team of your cell group.
Get Discipled. Seek out a Paul. God has someone ready to connect one-on-one with you to address specific questions and provide next steps. Ask your spiritual leader if he or she would journey with you.
Make Disciples. Start engaging our family enterprise by discipling others, either one-on-one or one-on-a- few! Approach a newer or younger believer whom you can disciple.
