Father Of Nations

David Brymer shared on what he had sensed from the Lord during camp and shared it with the congregation. He spoke about Abraham, the father of nations and took reference from the passage in Genesis 22 on the sacrifice of his son, Isaac.

He shared about how Abraham was given this name even before Isaac came. Abraham was set apart and was loyal to God (2 Chronicles 16:9). He shared about having faith in the waiting upon God’s promise even though it tarries.

Abraham’s faith was tested when he was instructed to sacrifice Isaac at the mountain. Abraham’s love for God was more than his love for God’s promises. He obeyed. It was also the first time “worship” was mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 22:5).

David Brymer also shared about the provision of a ram when Abraham was tested and found faithful. Though Isaac was God’s promise to Abraham, Abraham trusted God and was faithful in obedience.

Discussion Questions

1) Share how worship has shaped your life. [10 min]

Leader’s Notes: This is a question for members to share their personal experiences about worship. What are their experiences and the lessons they have learnt or are learning from worshipping God?  Any fresh insights in worship from the recent church camp will be useful for edification and encouragement for the cell group.  You may ask members how worship has made a difference in their lives as believers.

2) Read Genesis 22:1-18.  What lessons can you draw from this passage about worship?  How, do you think, is worship linked to sacrifice and surrender? [15 min]

Leader’s Notes: Leaders could get members to share about the above mentioned verses. David Prymer has chosen this passage to illustrate the importance of worship as it relates to the people that are closest to you.  Also talk about how worship can be used in leaving a legacy for the next generation.  Abraham’s example of worship had sure left an indelible mark on Isaac’s young mind.

Those who have attended the Precept topical study on Worship can help to shed some light on this passage.  Remember that the word ‘worship’ is first mentioned here in the Bible – weigh in on the significance of it.

3) What or who is the “Isaac” in your life?  Share how you had or will do to deal with this as the Lord has led you. [15 min]

Leader’s Notes: This is a question for members to share about the things that are important in their lives and the topic of surrender. Many important things matter to God too, however it is important that we love God above the good things in our lives, and trust Him through it.

This is a practical question and your “Isaac” may not relate to a person per se, but could be a situation or an incident.  Try to draw out application in a way to illustrate the point about surrender being an act of worship to God.
